Dr. Slaughter is an internationally renowned biomedical engineer and STEM educator. She is the Founding Executive Director of the Center for Bioelectronics at Old Dominion University, where she leads groundbreaking research in health technologies and is committed to expanding STEM opportunities for underserved students. She has secured significant grants and built partnerships with universities, businesses, and government agencies to advance STEM education and workforce development.
Internationally recognized for her work on minimally invasive medical devices, Dr. Slaughter focuses on improving quality of life for patients with diabetes, neurological disorders, and cancer, while also enhancing women’s health and military healthcare solutions. Her research and leadership have transformed the lives of many students, producing Rhodes, Marshall, Gates-Cambridge, Goldwater, NSF GRFP, and NIH G-RISE Scholars.
Dr. Slaughter’s outreach programs have impacted over 6,100 students, providing critical career exploration and mentorship. As Founding Director of the NIH G-RISE program, her scholarship program has doubled the number of underserved Ph.D. students at ODU, fostering academic success.
With over 110 scientific publications and numerous accolades, including the Virginia Business Magazine Top 100 People: Innovation 2024, Dr. Slaughter exemplifies excellence in research, mentorship, and civic leadership.
